Jason Hartley is lecturer in criminology at Griffith University in Brisbane, Australia. He is a former police officer with 23 years of experience, and has trained personnel for deployment in Timor Leste, the Solomon Islands, Iraq and Afghanistan. Jason specializes in, and has published on engagement with Muslim communities, Indigenous Polynesian approaches to rehabilitation and reducing recidivism, and Asian Organised Crime. Jason also completed a community internship in Hebron on the West Bank.

First Aid
The Student Support Team has a trained First Aid Officer who can provide care on site. Staff, students, contractors, and visitors are responsible for reporting all workplace injuries and illnesses to their direct supervisor or contact person within 48 hours.

Hazards
A hazard is a situation that has the potential to cause injury or illness, harm to health and/or danger to property or the environment. To report a hazard or potential hazard, please complete the Hazard Report Form
Work Integrated Learning
As outlined in the Work Integrated Learning Policy, it is the Institute’s responsibility to ensure appropriate insurance arrangements are in place when students are engaged in learning activities off campus. Our staff in charge of work integrated learning activities are responsible for:
- conducting a risk assessment to ensure appropriate first aid equipment is provided;
- determining the need for and level of training for first aid personnel.
Our Memorandums of Understanding note that the host organisation must adhere to workplace health and safety legislation. The quality of the site is monitored by a visit from the Program Director.
Please complete the Safety on Excursion and Field Trip Form as instructed by your lecturer.

Critical Incidents
A critical incident is a traumatic event, or the threat of such (within or outside Australia), which causes extreme stress, fear, or injury to you. We classify critical incidents as:
- Minor – localised impact and little or no potential to escalate. These can be resolved through standard procedures and be managed by our staff.
- Moderate – localised impact that could potentially escalate into a major incident, such as serious injury or death of a student or staff member.
- Major – substantial or catastrophic impact on the Institute’s operations with long-term or profound effect, such as threatening to cause multiple fatalities or serious injuries and/or significant property damage or adverse media reporting.
The Critical Incident Management Policy notes that we conduct regular risk assessments regarding the likelihood and impact of potential incidents. In accordance with the ESOS Act and National Code 2018, the Institute documents critical incidents in respect to international students.
