Calendars and Timetables
Courses, units, and specialisations usually have core and elective units. The amount of flexibility you have when choosing units will depend on
- the requirements of your course, and
- the number of core units you need to complete.
It is your responsibility as a student to choose suitable units and to enrol each semester. Please see the GLI Academic Calendar and the GLI Timetable for each semester to ensure you are meeting the requirements of your course.
Academic Integrity
GLI takes academic integrity very seriously. If you are found cheating in any form of assessment, you will be subject to procedures outlined in GLI’s Academic Integrity Policy. All students must complete the Academic Integrity Quiz during Orientation and list their results of the quiz on the title page of every assessment. Students also sign the Assessment Academic Integrity Declaration that registers their awareness of this policy. Further information regarding academic integrity and misconduct is included in the Student Portal on Moodle.
All assessment items except quizzes and exams are submitted via a Turnitin™ portal on the relevant Moodle™ webpage unless the Unit Coordinator has approved otherwise. The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools must be ethical, transparent, purposeful, and uphold the principles of academic integrity and reference the use accordingly. Using AI tools to complete assessment or research that is not the original work is academic misconduct, unless the lecturer or supervisor has permitted this in writing.
Where the maximum penalty for a breach is failure in one or more units, the penalty should be complemented by education as outlined above. In determining the penalty, consideration should be given to ‘cascading’ effects on course progression and completion.
Academic Transcript
An academic transcript is an official legal record that lists all the courses you have completed at GLI. Both current GLI students and GLI graduates can order an academic transcript online.
Each transcript shows your:
- program
- grades for every course studied
- credit and exemptions granted
- GPA for each semester or trimester, and
- official qualification (after your award is conferred).
You can’t request an academic transcript for select courses, select programs, or specific study periods.
Satisfactory academic progress is measured by achieving passing grades in at least 50% of units in a teaching period for which you are enrolled. At the end of each semester Registry produces an academic progress report and if you are determined as needing ‘early intervention’ you will be notified.
For further details, please see the Progression and Exclusion Policy.
Students who do not maintain satisfactory academic progress will be identified at Examiners Committee meeting at the end of each teaching period. Breaches of academic progress are classified as:
Level 1: A student fails one or more units but less than 50% of the total units in which they are enrolled in a semester, and it is their first breach. This will normally be addressed by providing additional academic support and placing one or more conditions on enrolment. Where a student does not attend a compulsory Academic Progress Review meeting a period of suspension may be imposed.
Level 2: A student fails 50% or more of the units in which they are enrolled in a semester and failed one unit or its equivalent for the second time or enrolled in a unit for the third time. This will normally be addressed by providing additional academic support and placing one or more conditions on enrolment or by imposing a period of suspension. Where a student does not attend a compulsory Academic Progress Review meeting a period of suspension may be imposed. Before a period of suspension is imposed the student will be given an opportunity to show cause.
Level 3: A student fails 50% or more of the units in their current semester as a stage 2 student or when they fail the same unit three times, or when a student does not meet the terms agreed to at a compulsory Academic Progress Review. This will normally be addressed by suspension or exclusion. Where a student does not attend a compulsory Academic Progress Review meeting a period of exclusion may be imposed. Before a period of suspension or exclusion is imposed the student will be given an opportunity to show cause.
Students have the right to appeal against a decision in relation to their academic progress by accessing the Student Grievances and Appeals Policy. An appeal must be lodged in writing within 10 working days of the original decision and must be accompanied by supporting documentation.
Letters of Commendation
To be eligible for a Dean’s Commendation for Academic Excellence, students must have either been:
- enrolled full-time in Semester 1, Semester 2, or Summer Semester, and achieved a minimum GPA of 6.6 in that semester, or
- enrolled part-time (enrolled in at least 6 units in semesters that commenced during the calendar year) and achieved a minimum GPA of 6.6 in that year. Part-time students must not have studied full-time for any portion of the year.
The award is listed on both your studies report and academic transcript. A certificate or letter of congratulations may also be sent by your faculty. Students don’t apply for the award.
Failing a unit
In certain circumstances, you may be allowed to appy for resit of an exam, supplementary assessment, or assessment re-mark. Contact your lecturer or Program Director for more information about your options and the best way to proceed.
