Jason Hartley is lecturer in criminology at Griffith University in Brisbane, Australia. He is a former police officer with 23 years of experience, and has trained personnel for deployment in Timor Leste, the Solomon Islands, Iraq and Afghanistan. Jason specializes in, and has published on engagement with Muslim communities, Indigenous Polynesian approaches to rehabilitation and reducing recidivism, and Asian Organised Crime. Jason also completed a community internship in Hebron on the West Bank.
RES521 Research Project
The purpose of this unit is to provide students with the opportunity to integrate the knowledge gained throughout their course and to apply this in an extended research project in their area of specialisation within the Master of Police Leadership or Master of Counterterrorism Leadership. Throughout this unit students will use advanced cognitive skills to think critically and apply research methods to plan and undertake a research project, analyse this situation faced, and present proposed solutions and/or recommendations. Students are expected to draw extensively on the knowledge and skills they have gained throughout their course.

UNIT LEARNING OUTCOMES
- Identify a complex contemporary emerging issue or challenge, associated with strategic leadership in either counterterrorism or policing, suitable for advanced research.
- Develop and independently execute the research proposal on the chosen leadership issue or challenge.
- Undertake research data collection and data analysis as described in the research proposal on the identified emerging issue or challenge.
- Demonstrate the application of advanced knowledge to the emerging issue or challenge, associated with counterterrorism or policing leadership, through the formulation of practical and ethical solutions and/or recommendations.
- Effectively disseminate findings and outcomes to a variety of audiences using highly developed communication skills.
