Jason Hartley is lecturer in criminology at Griffith University in Brisbane, Australia. He is a former police officer with 23 years of experience, and has trained personnel for deployment in Timor Leste, the Solomon Islands, Iraq and Afghanistan. Jason specializes in, and has published on engagement with Muslim communities, Indigenous Polynesian approaches to rehabilitation and reducing recidivism, and Asian Organised Crime. Jason also completed a community internship in Hebron on the West Bank.
MPL507 Emergency and Risk Management
Policing, alongside other allied government services such as ambulance, fire, and rescue teams plays a key leadership role in emergency and risk management incidents. The COVID-19 pandemic has brought into sharp focus the centrality of policing leadership in such global risk management situations. The focus of this unit is a critical examination of police as frontline emergency responders where crisis, risk, and dangerousness are constant characteristics as well as the need for decisive decision making and well-established partnerships. The aim of the unit is to enhance leadership capacity by equipping students with the knowledge and skills to play a key role in emergency and risk management situations.
