MPL501 New Perspectives and Challenges in Policing
Police leaders worldwide are confronted with an array of leadership challenges, in a role that has become increasingly complex and demanding. This unit critically examines the various contextual factors in policing such as its conservative ‘risk adverse’ culture, the dispersed environments in which it operates, its discretionary powers, accountability, police unions, and the challenge of police reform to overhaul unwieldy police bureaucracies including efforts to flatten hierarchical structures. The aim of this unit is to provide emerging police leaders with appropriate knowledge and skills to tackle the substantial challenges associated with the increasingly larger, complex and dynamic police role.
