Jason Hartley is lecturer in criminology at Griffith University in Brisbane, Australia. He is a former police officer with 23 years of experience, and has trained personnel for deployment in Timor Leste, the Solomon Islands, Iraq and Afghanistan. Jason specializes in, and has published on engagement with Muslim communities, Indigenous Polynesian approaches to rehabilitation and reducing recidivism, and Asian Organised Crime. Jason also completed a community internship in Hebron on the West Bank.
ITC401 Foundations of Computing and Networking
This unit introduces the fundamentals that underpin computer systems and computer networks. It provides an overview of hardware, software, and computing concepts, such as operating systems and command lines. Students also explore networking topics, including OS fundamentals, networking protocols, network layouts, and key security measures. Students will gain the skills required to work effectively in today’s technology-driven world and to support the infrastructure that powers modern industries.

- Critique computer architectures and network models, including OSI layers, to evaluate performance and interoperability implications
- Critically evaluate operating-system internals—process, memory, filesystem, access control to recommend secure, efficient configuration strategies
- Design and script Bash/Python workflows that automate administration, validate outputs, and optimise system reliability
- Implement and troubleshoot IPv4/IPv6 addressing, subnetting, routing, DHCP and DNS, justifying decisions using network-design principles
